02 Cohost Archive Ahoy

VoilĂ !

Most of my cohost posts now live here! You can find them in the Cohost Archive category or just by scrolling back through the posts, they’re all marked with their original upload date and marked with “co-” at the front so you can tell which’s which! Wanting to preserve this one somewhere was like half the reason I bothered at all with this :D

I spent about half a day writing a script to scrape my cohost export and generate hugo pages based on the contents (as well as do a few other things like certain links into hugo shortcodes and replace cohost cdn references with local references) and here’s the result! Everything you see here is like 99% generated output, literally the only bits I did by hand were apply new tags where relevant and redirect replies to their matching page here instead of cohost.

01 Hello World

You occasionally like… impuslively decide you wanna do a new thing, and then you get so entranced in that thing that you forget to sleep or do anything else until you finished doing it?

or phrased another way, do you have adhd?

Anyway at time of writing its 5:20am and I just spent the last 8 hours learning enough Hugo to put together this new website. Why right now? No idea.

co-20: i’m finally paying for gamemaker’s web export

Original tags were: gamedev, gamemaker, gameMakerStudio, ludum dare

seeing people in the lead up to ludum dare 53 say they’re no longer willing to download submissions as executables because “what if its malware :(” and insist “every engine nowadays has web export, you should be exporting to web” has lead me to finally grab a subscription to gamemaker’s indie tier just so i can access it’s html5 export. i’ve heard a lot of rough things about GMS2’s html5 support over the years, various ways it breaks/doesn’t work as expected, but it seems a lot of that stuff has been fixed since then so if all goes well i should be able to support web for at least ld53, who knows if i’ll maintain my sub after that or if i’ll only sub for months with a jam i care about in it.

co-18: maybe i should make a mastodon after all

Original tags were: twitter death, mastodon, twitter, mammoth website

a crude pixel drawing of a fat bumblebee looking up a thought bubble with a question mark above its head, the thought bubble has a blue elephant inside

initially when twitter was supposed to explode and everyone was claiming to migrate to mastodon i didn’t bother making one because i was like “ehhh i don’t like (some minor gripes) about mastodon, its not going to replace twitter for me, i’m just happy with cohost” and for a while it was fine because lots of people who claimed to leave ended up sticking around on twitter anyway.

co-17: the folly of games about programming

Original tags were: gamedev, gamedesign, programming, rant

every 6-8 months i’m possessed by the desire to try and make something akin to 0x10c and considering A) how many games there already are about programming and B) how many failed attempts there have been to remake 0x10c (one reddit post counted 21), i feel like it has to be an instinct certain kinds of game developers just innately have, similar to how certain kinds of dev just really want to make their own dwarf-fortress/imsim style magnum opus.

co-16: A MIRACLE

YES!

Someone made a video recapping the rain world devlog and its FILLED with exactly the screenshots and gifs from the thread that I lamented going missing! I dunno how they got copies of them all, but I’m so happy to see that they’ve been preserved, I was so scared so much of that history had gone missing.

co-15: i need to buy a flight stick now (i do not need a flight stick)

falling down the rabbit hole of “what if i made a space game” to “space games with flight stick support are cool” to “how much do flight sticks even cost” to “oh thats totally affordable, i need to buy a flight stick” despite the fact i play zero games that would benefit from me having a flight stick

i love being suddenly overtaken by a strong compulsion to buy a gadget i have literally no use for

co-14: brain says no

Original tags were: gamedev, adhd

a crude pixel drawing of a fat bumblebee laying infront of a laptop with a bored expression

i’ve hit another one of these terrible lulls between projects where my last project “went cold” because i didn’t touch it for two weeks so i no longer have the motivation to pick it up again, but i can’t start any new projects because the nasty little decision goblin in my head complains that everything i’m coming up with “will take too much boring boilerplate before its fun to work on”, so neither my last project nor any new projects are appealing to me

Original tags were: texttovideo, AI is Theft

i know “ai training data being just scraped from places” isn’t news in any regard but i do find it kind of revealing in a funny way that that text to video thing going around seems to watermark every single thing i’ve seen anyone generate with it with “shutterstock”

gee guys i wonder where you got all that training data, i wonder if you used it with permission, hmmmmm
